Murcia the quaint city of Spain

I’ve had an opportunity to volunteer in Murcia, Spain. I found this opportunity through Workaway. Someone was looking for a language exchange opportunity. I taught them English in exchange for free accommodation. I highly recommend Workaway if you are looking for volunteer opportunities. They have all kind of volunteering opportunities from language exchange, working at hostels, childcare, working at farms, NGO, etc. It’s one of the best way to be able to travel especially if you are a budget traveler.

Murcia is a city about 2.5 hours train ride from Valencia. It’s a smaller city compared to Barcelona & Madrid. It’s quieter but I feel it has a certain charm about it. People are nice. The food are great, apparently they said Murcia is the gastronomy capital of Spain. It’s very affordable too. I went out with my host for some tapas, we had two beers, one glass of wine, and four different tapas for only $15 total for both of us.

I also did some sightseeing around the city. They have a beautiful cathedral. I didn’t get to go inside the cathedral, but it’s beautiful from the outside.

Another attraction in Murcia that I think it worth the visit, is the Real Casino de Murcia. This is not a gambling casino, but actually this place used to be a private social club & culture center in a 19th century building. Inside the building, everything are grand. You can visit this Casino for $5 admission fee and that comes with audio tour guide. It is a beautiful place and I felt like I was in the series  Bridgerton.

I enjoyed my time in Murcia and I considered maybe to live there someday when I will retire. It’s affordable with many delicious restaurants and you will experience living with the friendliest people in the world. If you had time in Spain, you should spend a day or two in Murcia.
